I got a big hammer out but didn't use it in the end. I diod however take a full fle set copy from another pc that had niot been autopatched with the latest files and copied it to the problem PC (after changing the folder name of the troiublesome one). Bingo. All fine.

I am no wiser about what the problem was but its fixed. The problem kicked in after autopatching and kicked out after removing those files. Something in that file set is not right I think :s
