    5 things,

Are both your laptops in the same Work group?

    And...

Has your brother shared the internet connection from his laptop?

    And...

In your LAN settings in Internet Options, is it set to Automatically Detect settings?

    And...

Check both your firewalls to allow File & Printer Sharing, and any other ports that might effect the internet sharing.

    And...

Check your IP addresses, are they static? Or Assign Automatically? Check both your laptops are on the same IP scope otherwise they will not be able to communicate with each other.

If you need any help with any of the steps I can give you a brief guide. Hope it helps lol.

If i understand you right you are connected to the internet and ya bro is connecting to the internet via your pc.

This is a very old way of networking and is very unstable.
You must make sure the your using a crossover adapter/cable .

Check that the network bridge is still active also

using the card on vista then xp shouldnt make a difference, get the latest drivers for the card onto the xp machine and install them before you put the card in, it seems stupid but using the wrong driver causes about 70% of network errors.

and pob is right this form of networking is very unstable, get yourself a mini switch, costs about ?20, and run your internet on both pcs from that and you should see an improvement

just a quick thought, do virgin not send you a router to connect to the net with? surely most routers/cable routers have more than one lan connector even in a poor quality router you have at least 1 lan port and 1 usb port, sureley that would eliminate the need for an internet sharing setup, if you do need to use internet connection sharing check out this site http://www.lytebyte.com/2007/02/21/h...r-using-vista/ should help a tad

virgin send you a modem to connect with and it does have an ethernet port and a usb port however to stop people "stealing" bandwidth only one can be active at a time which is why i suggested a switch.

with first class next day p&p this one works out just short of ?20, we use them in work and they're great, never break as all they do is share the connection, no silly security needed and nothing there to go wrong, just plug the net cable into port one and up to four pc's into ports two tofive and you're sorted.
