hi all any1 know wht Secondary IDE channel is and any1 know how to fix it? ill post a screenie later.
IDE controllers is what u connect your IDE disks 2
normally any IDE controoler have two channels primary IDE channel and Secondry IDE channel
every channel can hold up to two disk(Master and Slave) so in total you can get 4 disks per controller
what matters is that when booting the system it looks for os in that order primary master-->Primary Slave--->> Secondary master --->> secondarly slave..
so that's what the IDE channels is about now what's the problem with it

the second channel i believe is the Second Connection of the IDE cable (do you remember the old style printer ribbon cables? - if my memory serves the IDE cable is the one that connects to your Hard Drives.)
if you have issues with the cables try taking the side of the pc off and then just make sure that they are all in their sockets correctly. (if they are all in place you can try taking them out give them a quick blow {do your best not to spit on them :P ) and then reseating them back in again - this should remove any dust that might be causing a dodgy connection.
wait for another geeks reply before taking the advice though as im not great with the cables :P
(but if i am correct more often that not the IDE cable is grey and will have 2 maybe 3 Black connectors on it.i just googled it and i think i am right
but still wait for confirmation

i havent messed about with hardware in ages, but dont harddrives etc have a little jumper (black plastic thing that goes over the pins) to say wether you want it as master or slave.
maybe thats giving you some error? if you just bought a new drive or something?
SATA ftw![]()
Sounds like you're looking at it in the Device Manager.
A red cross usually means it has been disabled. If you've got nothing plugged into it then you have nothing to worry about anyway :P.

^^ good to see the top geeks have arrived(im like maxwell more software based, but with a little knowledge of the hardware
as to the comment about the Jumpers - changing them around would cause the pc to show up saying it didnt have a hard drive installed due to the system either seeing to Masters and getting confused or 2 slaves and not finding anything to control them :P at least thats my laymens explanation
)
